Welcome to Gatehouse Lake Angling Club

Gatehouse Lake is a community asset located in the parish of Hutton Cranswick. It is a beautiful tranquil
environment and a haven for local wildlife. It has benches for relaxation and a bird hide is available.

Our History

Gatehouse Lake Angling Club was formed in 2017. It has secured a long-term lease with Hutton Cranswick Parish Council for angling rights on the lake.

We pride ourselves on nurturing a sustainable high quality mixed species fishery. Below you will find examples of our projects and initiatives.

The Lake holds carp, roach, perch, tench and bream - carp to 20lb perch to 4lb.

Stocking history:

  • 200 carp @ 1-3lb (2017)
  • 1000 roach 1000 tench 1000 bream all fingerlings (2017)
  • 400 roach 200 tench @8-10 inches (2025)

Membership

We are a members only club with membership limited to 50. Our membership season runs April to April.

Our annual membership fee is £100 plus 10 hours work party attendance (or you may waive your work party commitment - the fee is then £200). Our Work Parties are essential for the maintenance of the fishery and future of the Club.

Concessionary members (65+ or physical limitations) have no need to attend work parties. If you are interested in joining the Club then please make an enquiry to info@gatehouselakeanglingclub.co.uk and your name will be added to the waiting list.

Our Major Projects

Otter Fence

Our otter fence is designed to best practice standards and fully encircles the lake.

Matting

Our first major challenge on taking the lease was to control a proliferation of weed. This was achieved by the use of jute matting followed by a program of semi-automated weed pulling and a feeding programme designed to provide good water colour for longer term weed suppression.

Angling Pegs

Angling pegs have been redesigned and now comprise a galvanized shutter front and wooden frame with a mulch carpet.

Stocking and stock pond

The Club introduces new stock occasionally. Going forward we plan to use our mesh covered stock pond to ‘bring on’ our juvenile fish free from the threat of predation.

Fish Refuges

Following a bad round of cormorant predation in 2024 the Club has fitted 2 fish refuges.

Water Quality

Gatehouse Lake is spring fed. We monitor dissolved oxygen content regularly and when necessary run our aerator.

Governance

The General Committee are responsible for the day to day running of the Club.

The Club holds its AGM in March each year. The AGM allows members to influence the direction of the club and formally hold the committee to account for the activities over the previous year.

The Club normally issues two newsletters each year.
